Teachers, students with business ideas encouraged to enter the competition

LAS CRUCES – Middle and high school teachers and students in the Borderplex region: Do you have a business idea that solves a problem? The Hunt Center for Entrepreneurship at State University of New Mexico at the Arrowhead Center and the STTE Foundation of El Paso want to hear these ideas and find the best.

The 100 Day Challenge will allow contestants to learn how to pitch an idea, create a pitch deck, and start building a network of like-minded problem solvers. The challenge runs from February 7 to May 22. There is no registration fee to participate.

“This new challenge allows teachers and students to delve into solving problems they may have thought of and get valuable feedback on whether an audience is purchasing or using the service,” said Lydia Hammond, Manager of the Arrowhead Center Innoventure program.

The Innoventure program leads entrepreneurial education for Kindergarten to Grade 12 across New Mexico.

“We know the Borderplex has incredible strengths and issues that might require a local touch to think about and solve. We are grateful to partner with the STTE Foundation for this competition for young people in the region, ”said Hammond.

There are three stages to the 100 Day Challenge. For step 1, competitors start with an idea that focuses on solving a problem. They then get a parent’s approval to film a 60-second pitch and post it on YouTube. Links must be submitted by March 26th.

“Offering entrepreneurship programs like the 100 Day Challenge is essential to accelerate our economic recovery,” said Joseph Sapien, Executive Director of the STTE Foundation.

The first 100 participants who submit their 60-second virtual pitch will be rewarded with a $ 5 gift card. Teachers are also eligible to win scholarships.

“Teachers who have 10 student locations that enter Stage 1 will be entered into a raffle for a stipend of $ 100,” Sapien said. “Teachers in particular have been challenged during the pandemic and we want to reward them for their valiant efforts. “

Step 2 consists of refining the ideas, developing a business plan and a pitch deck. A workshop on how to complete this next step will be held online on April 3. Competitors will then submit the final pitch deck by April 16. The first 100 participants will receive a $ 10 gift card.

Judges will select the top 10 contestants for Stage 3 who will advance to a formal competition in May, competing for cash prizes ranging from $ 300 to $ 100, and tech items, including laptops. Competition places are limited to the first 100 participants and on a first come, first served basis.
