We had a fantastic response to the initial ‘Brainwaves’ section of the Silver Linings competition to design solutions to improve care for the elderly.

We believe the contest can help generate discussion and ideas to complement the heightened ESG thinking of pension funds whose goal is to provide the best possible retirement pot in the best possible world to enjoy that retirement; In our view, a key factor in this is – or should be – the quality and sustainability of available care, whether housing, technology or community.

You can see the fantastic ideas participants came up with here on the Silver Linings website where our Brainwaves winners recorded short one-minute clips of their ideas.

Take a look, they are great!

You should also check out the interview we did with our “Brainwave of Brainwaves” winner Anvam Nagpal, as voted on by the public at The Brainwave Winners event earlier this summer.

Anvam talks to myself and Dr. Rachel Melsom about the inspiration behind her winning brainwave “Prescient”, a smart and potentially important technology that could help improve the lives of older people with incontinence issues.

BUT, generating brainwaves was just the start of the competition; an introductory drum roll if you wish.

Our goal with the Silver Linings competition has always been to incubate the ideas people have about how to improve care for the elderly, and then help take those fledgling (and even established) ideas to their next stages. towards a potential investment by encouraging the creation of simple businesses. plans, then pitch those ideas to an investing audience to see if the ideas could fly as realistic, investable projects.

We believe this is a valuable addition to help address the crisis in elderly care that we see in many countries.

And to support this, our judges – all experts in their fields – wrote opinions or comments on the business plans.

Anyone with an idea should read Colum Lowe, Director of the Design Age Institute and one of the Silver Linings competition judges,’s column on “How to Write a 3000 Word Business Plan to Enter the Aged Care Competition Silver Linings”.

And investors should read the article by Andy Lewis, Partner and Niamh Hamlyn, Senior Partner in Travers Smith’s Pensions Team, titled: The Silver Linings Aged Care Competition: Addressing a Key Part of the ‘S ‘Missing in Pension Trustees’ ESG Programs.

Travers Smith will be hosting the event in February next year where we will announce the winners of the business plan entries.

We will also be hosting an information event on November 25th at the Audley Villages retirement complex, Clapham, London with our judges and media in attendance where you can find out more about the competition, business plans and meet the judges for you inspire: more information soon. We hope to see you there!
