Moray start-ups invited to test their business ideas via a pop-up store program

MORAY entrepreneurs and small businesses are invited to participate in a new pop-up store program.

Start-ups are offered the option to use empty stores for up to four weeks at no cost, excluding utilities, under the program that runs until January 2023.

Stores will be available in Forres, Keith, Elgin, Buckie, Lossiemouth, Dufftown and Aberlour, subject to the availability of suitable premises.

Through this program, current or potential business owners can start a new business, test their merchandise, or target a different audience to assess whether a full-time presence in a city would be viable for them.

Moray Council Economic Development and Infrastructure Services Committee Chair Cllr Graham Leadbitter said, “Pop-up shops provide an ideal platform for businesses to try out a physical presence on the streets and raise their profile. business before committing to something long. term.

A successful pop-up store program was previously in place at Keith.

“The program is equally beneficial for homeowners as it brings their empty properties back to service and can lead to a longer term lease / sale – a win-win situation for all parties involved.

“As our city centers continue to face difficult times, due to the Covid-19 pandemic and changing purchasing habits, it is important to help small businesses or independent businesses to grow and thrive.

“I look forward to seeing more of our local businesses overcome some of the challenges they face while attracting more buyers to downtown areas. “

The program is part of Moray’s broader economic stimulus package and was developed in response to an increase in the number of vacant business units in the city center and the number of new start-ups in the area.

A previously successful pop-up program at Keith saw the town’s Mid Street Conservation Area go from the highest store vacancy rate in Moray to the lowest.
