Life After Louisiana: Levi Lewis’ Business Plan

UL senior quarterback Levi Lewis will play the Ragin ‘Cajuns one last time on Saturday. He will quit as the school’s all-time leader in touchdowns and wins.

While Lewis certainly has aspirations for the NFL, hss’s future plans are not just X’s and O’s, but dollars and cents as well.

“Guys (weren’t) able to use their name, image and likeness in the past,” Lewis said. “So now that’s a good thing. More guys can have more ideas. How to make money.”

When the NIL era of college sports began on July 1, quarterback Levi Lewis was the first UL athlete to benefit from signing with EatLafayette. The deal not only gives Lewis some change, but more importantly, fuel for his future.

“Ben Berthelot called me on the phone that night to ask me what you wanted to do,” recalls Lewis. “I said, let’s do it because it’s something I intend to do. I owning my restaurant is one of my 3 pillars.”

Lewis wants to be a businessman after football. He referred to his 3 pillars, which include owning soul food and vegan restaurants. Continue its 8181 and Flex clothing lines and help with an automobile club in Baton Rouge. All his efforts include his loved ones by his side.

“I’m all about the family,” says Lewis. “I’m all about partnering with homestead and having a family business. I’m looking long term with this deal.”

To find where this entrepreneurial spirit comes from, you don’t have to look very far. Her mother Celeste Smith and her father Greg Lewis own a hair salon and a Brookstown barber shop in Baton Rouge.

“I like being self-employed,” Smith expresses. “It really gave me the flexibility to travel with them. Work my own hours.”

“You have to work twice as hard,” says Greg Lewis. “It’s a good feeling, but you have to work twice as hard. Nothing like being your own boss. You set your own tone. It all depends on what you put into it.”

From an early age, Levi Lewis learned the value of hard work and savings by watching over his parents and earning a living for himself.

“My boys, I pushed them hard,” said Greg. “(They) cut the grass, clean up.”

“They didn’t like it, but they would understand why he did it,” Smith adds. “He would give them a check and I would open an account for them. Just be able to be flexible.”

Now the tables will soon be turned for Celeste and the family, as Lewis prepares to take his dominance from the grill to the grill.

“You know what? He got me… I have a notebook with nothing but recipes, all kinds of stuff I wrote down,” Smtih realizes during the interview. “He was like ‘you gotta put all your recipes in there.’ Everything happens. Because now my sister cooks on the weekends.

“We were going to have to catch up with him,” Smith adds with a laugh and then a hiccup. “Oh my God … because it happens fast.”
