Greenway business ideas course to start in March

Entrepreneurs considering starting an ecotourism, leisure or hospitality business can take part in a new workshop focusing on greenways and blueways.

cross roads are planned for Blessington, Arklow to Shillelagh, Wicklow to Greystones with other routes in the county under consideration.

The County Wicklow Bright Light Blue Route project will create five nodes of blue lanes that could lead to increased participation in coastal outdoor recreation along the county’s coastline. Each node will have a defined access point to the sea, a trailhead, signage and interpretive information. Proposed nodes for this project are Arklow and surrounding beaches/harbour, Wicklow, Kilcoole, Greystones and Bray.

LEO Wicklow recognizes that greenways could provide a significant opportunity to build a business by attracting growing numbers of Irish and international tourists to the county and has designed a series of workshops to reflect this.

The Start Your Own Business course will cover all the basics from ideation to business planning. It will aim to give participants the skills, knowledge and attitude to determine if entrepreneurship is right for them and, if so, how to start a business to be successful.

This program will be specific to those who wish to take advantage of the opportunity present in the county’s tourism industry through the development of green and blue routes.

The sessions will focus on the key elements of starting a business, but the unique angle of each session will be on opportunities in the field of ecotourism, with specific case studies and guest speakers from industry to share their knowledge and available resources. In addition, seasonal/tourist impact issues on planning, insurance issues for high risk activities and other topics specific to this type of business will be addressed.

The program also aims to create a permanent peer support network and a group of SMEs that focus on projects in the same sector. There is the added possibility of collaboration in terms of developing new products or services as participants explore the ideation process. Participants can also support each other in the early years of business through referrals and other sales and marketing collaborations.

The ten-week program will be delivered online from Tuesday March 1 to Tuesday May 3.
